Faithfully serving the people of Huntsville, AL since 1818.
This is Who We Are
Rooted in Scripture:
Scripture is at the heart of who we are as Presbyterians and people of faith. We believe the Bible is God's holy word to us all. We take its teachings seriously and seek to learn and grow in our faith together.
United in Christ:
Our church is filled with a diversity of people. We are people of different ages, socio-economic classes, and races. No matter our differences, we are always united in knowing that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Reaching Out in Faith:
Our faith compels us to serve others and live out Jesus' teachings of love and care for all. Mission is an essential part of who we are, and we seek to be engaged locally and around the world.
Our History: Rooted in Faith Since 1818
First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville traces its beginnings to June 15, 1818, when Rev. Gideon Blackburn, D.D., organized one of Alabama’s earliest Presbyterian congregations. The first church building stood on this very site and was dedicated on October 13, 1822.
Our current sanctuary, a striking example of mid-19th-century Gothic Revival architecture, was dedicated on May 18, 1860. Designed by Adolphus Heiman, an Austrian-born architect based in Nashville, the building reflects the bold vision of a growing congregation. Known for his tower-churches across Middle Tennessee, Heiman originally resisted adding a spire — a feature uncommon in 1850s Gothic designs. But church leaders, eager to match the height of the new 1859 Episcopal Church nearby, insisted. The spire rose proudly until a storm toppled it in 1878, as reported in local newspapers. (Some say it may not have been anchored quite as Heiman intended!)
Listed at 312 Lincoln Street in the Twickenham Historic District (District 941), the church has been lovingly restored over the years, including interior remodeling by Johnson & Haynes Architects in 1997 (HJAC).
Names of every minister who has served this congregation are honored on plaques inside the sanctuary, a testament to generations of faithful leadership.
On our 150th anniversary in 1969, the Alabama Historical Association placed a marker here, recognizing our enduring place in Huntsville’s spiritual and civic life.
In 2018 we celebrated our 200th anniversary with a special worship service and a joyful gathering of our congregation. Today, as we continue to worship, serve, and grow, we stand on the foundation of those who came before — rooted in Scripture, united in Christ, and reaching out in faith for over two centuries.
